What is Kratom?

Kratom or (Mitragyna speciosa) is a plant that is closely related to the coffee plant. It contains many alkaloids including mitragynine, mitraphylline, and 7-hydroxymitragynine. 7-hydroxymitragynine and mitragynine are structurally related to yohimbine and other tryptamines, and their pharmacology is quite different, acting as mu-opioid receptor agonists.  Kratom acts as an opioid agonist, which means that it attaches to opioid receptors in your brain. These receptors influence mood and anxiety. The active alkaloids in Kratom bind to these receptors to relieve pain, improve energy and mood, and gives a euphoric-like feeling, just like opiates such as morphine and opium. The difference between the effects of Kratom and opiates is that in smaller doses, Kratom prefers delta opioid receptors, while opiates bind to mu opioid receptors. At higher doses, the active ingredients in Kratom bind to mu opioid receptors. This is the reason for kratom being stimulation at low doses and sedating at high doses.

Kratom also contains alkaloids found in Uña de gato, which are thought to play a beneficial role on the immune system and lower blood pressure, as well as epicatechin, a powerful antioxidant also found in dark chocolate and closely related to the EGCG that gives green tea its beneficial effects.
